Whallonsburg Road Study and Hamlet Streetscape Design
This is the concept that has been reviewed and improved upon since November 2025. The engineer will discuss this design and the improvements and modifications made to it at the August 25, 2026 meeting at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall.
November 12, 2025 - 30+ interested individuals came out to the Grange to learn about the sketch designs and provide feedback to what was created thus far. Those sketch plans are available for review below. The MINOR REALIGNMENT option garnered the most early support, but with modifications recommended.
Project outcome: The Town recognizes that the intersection in Whallonsburg is not as favorable to navigate as one would like. Limited sight lines, a growing economy with more pedestrians and increased use of the Grange all contribute to a desire to improve this functionality of this area. Route 22 (owned by New York State) is intersected by Essex County Route 55 (Walker Road/Whallons Bay Road) and Cook Road (Town of Essex owned). Multiple public agencies claim ownership and oversight in this small hamlet. This outcome of this project is to determine if improvements to the intersection can be made to enhance safety and functionality, regardless of the road that one travels on.
