Water District Information

The source of water for Essex Water District is Lake Champlain. The water plant is located on Beggs Point where water is pumped from the lake and filtered using pressure diatomaceous earth filters. The intake extends 260 feet into the lake and the intake structure is 45 feet deep. There are 2 diatomaceous earth (DE) filters each rated at 60gpm, designed to operate one at a time. The water is disinfected with chlorine solution and pumped into a baffled 19,000-gallon chlorine contact tank. High lift pumps, each rated at 70gpm supply water to the distribution system. There is a 137,000-gallon glass fused steel storage tank in the distribution system. Water is treated with orthophosphate at the filtration plant for corrosion control. A generator provides auxiliary power. The water system serves approximately 350 people thorough 170 service connections. - NYS DOH 1/29/21
